How we compared

This comparison is based on OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s published plans, help articles and documentation, checked on October 31, 2026. We did not run a head-to-head coding benchmark for this article. Model quality changes with every release, so we focus on what each subscription includes and how the coding tools work.

OpenAI’s help center lists ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month, billed monthly only; there is no annual plan. ChatGPT also offers Go, a lower-cost plan, and Pro, with three usage tiers, but their prices are shown only inside the pricing page’s checkout and vary by country, so we have not listed them. Claude Pro is $20 a month or $17 billed annually, and Max and Ultra are $100 and $200.

The coding tools: Codex vs Claude Code

Codex is OpenAI’s coding agent, included with ChatGPT. The pricing page lists limited Codex access on Free and Go, Codex on Plus, and expanded Codex on Pro. Plus also includes code edits in the macOS app and developer mode (beta).

Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding agent for the terminal and IDEs, included from Claude Pro. It reads your project, edits files and runs commands with your permission. See Cursor vs Claude Code for how it compares with an AI editor.

Context windows matter for code

Large codebases need a large context window, the amount of text the model can consider at once. ChatGPT’s pricing page lists a 256K-token reasoning context on Go and Plus, and 400K on Pro, with roughly 320 pages of text as the input maximum on Plus. For everyday chat (GPT Instant), it lists 54K tokens on Plus. Coding agents work around these limits by reading only the files they need, but bigger windows help with large refactors.

Limits and how fast you hit them

Both services cap usage. OpenAI says Plus may include message caps that vary with demand. Claude Pro uses shared limits that reset every five hours and weekly, and Claude Code draws from the same allowance as chat. On both, long agent sessions and reasoning-heavy models use limits fastest. If you regularly hit the limit, the next step up is $100 to $200 a month on Claude, or ChatGPT Pro.

When to use the API instead

Subscriptions do not include API usage (apart from the credits on the top tiers). If you are building an app or running automated jobs, pay per token through the API. For a typical feature, the cheapest capable model can cost a few dollars a month; compare them in AI API pricing compared or the AI API cost calculator.

Getting better code from either assistant

The habits that make AI coding work are the same on both services:

  1. Give context up front. Say which language, framework and versions you use, and paste the relevant file or error rather than describing it.
  2. Ask for a plan before code on anything bigger than a function. Fixing a plan is cheaper than fixing a diff.
  3. Work in small steps. One change, run it, then the next. Long sessions also use up limits faster.
  4. Make it check its own work. Ask the agent to run tests, linters or a syntax check. When we built this site, running php -l on every file before activating the plugin caught mistakes early.
  5. Review everything that touches production. Read commands before an agent runs them on a server, especially as root.
  6. Keep secrets out of prompts. Do not paste passwords or API keys into a chat. Reference environment variables instead.

Privacy and training settings

OpenAI’s help center says it may use conversations to improve its models, and that you can opt out in its data controls. Business and Enterprise plans have separate data terms. Anthropic publishes its own consumer and commercial terms. Before you paste company code into either service, check which plan your organization allows and whether training is turned off.

Which should you choose?

  • You want one assistant for everything, including images and voice, plus coding: ChatGPT Plus.
  • Coding is the main use and you like terminal agents: Claude Pro with Claude Code.
  • You want to try a coding agent for free: ChatGPT Free’s limited Codex access.
  • You want to save with annual billing: Claude Pro at $17 a month billed annually.
